I created a traditionally pieced block using two different sized flying geese blocks to create the effect of a school of fish.
Here's the finished sample block all sewn together. You can see each fish includes three flying geese blocks. I use the traditional one at a time method to create the flying geese in my pattern, but feel free to use whatever process that works best for you :)
I know three fish isn't a lot for a school, however, if you create several blocks together, it really starts to look like a school of fish. You can piece the 12" blocks together in rows, or if you'd like to offset the design, I mocked up a version here where I've added 12 1/2" x 6 1/2" blocks to offset the rows a half step and give the quilt a bit more movement.
Or if you're looking for a few quilt blocks to coordinate together, I highly recommend pairing my 'School of Fish' block with the 'Flying Fish' block by Perkins Dry Goods and the 'Fish' block by Mom and Me Quilting Co. When combined, these three blocks will make for a fun traditionally pieced quilt that features a variety of geometric fishies!
